Story for Tikli: The Fox

Far, far away; well not that far actually, just across the fields besides the village was the forest. There are many, many, more than you can count, trees in the forest. There are small trees, little trees and big trees. There are baby trees who could only just stand, young trees who are always playing with the light breeze, and great big trees who could stand still even during the storm.

But one tree was big; really, really big. Bigger than all the trees in the forest. Under the roots of that big tree was a hole, where lived a fox. A nice brown fox who loved to sleep all day in his hole under the tree. One evening, the fox woke up. He got out of the hole and stretched a bit, then started to clean himself; sleeping in a hole can make you dirty.

The fox was hungry, very hungry. You would be too, if you sleep all day. So the fox started to search some food; you know, foods that foxes love, like insects, frogs, mice or squirrels. His search brought him to the fields besides the village. The fields were full of mice. The fox thought; hmm, if I can catch a large mouse, it will be so yummy. But it's not easy to catch the mice. The small mice are so small that can hide under a leaf and you will never notice. And all the mice are always alert for dangers and they can run so fast.

So he hid. He stayed so still that the mice didn't even notice him. But he was very alert, carefully watching the mice. And when a large mouse came a bit close, bang, he jumped on it in a flash and down it went to Mr. Foxes belly. Then the fox went to a pond nearby and drank. He drank a lot, he hasn't drank all day.

Now with his belly full, the fox thought about having some fun and decided to visit the village. Roaming inside the village, he met a cat, who climbed up on a tree. The fox said, "come down Mr. Kitty, let's play.". The cat said, " go away naughty fox, you don't play, you just bite and scratch everyone." That was true, the fox was very naughty indeed. The fox moved on. Then he met some cows. The cows also knew that the fox is never up to any good. One of the cows bellowed, "if you come this way, I will give you such a punch with my horns that your belly will puncture." The fox ran another way.

Then he found a chicken-coop. The fox started to tease the chickens, "come, come, nice chickens, let me bite you." The hens got very scared and started to scream, "fox is going to bite us, fox is going to eat us." But there was a great, big rooster who didn't lose his wits. He shouted, "dogs, dogs, where are you! There's fox in our house." There was a dog nearby and he heard the rooster. The dog started to call his friends "fox in the village, fox in the village"; soon every dog in the village was shouting "fox in the village, fox in the village" and they were all rushing to the chicken-coop.

Now the fox was really, really scared. He knew the dogs will give him a good beating if they catch him. So he ran, ran as fast as he could. The dogs ran after him and kept shouting "catch the naughty fox, bite the naughty fox." The fox knew he must hide in the forest. The dogs didn't know the forest as good as him and they wouldn't find him. But the forest was faraway; beyond the village, across the fields. So he kept running and running and the dogs kept chasing and shouting. The dogs would have caught him, if the forest was a little further. The fox ran into the forest and hid in a bush. The dogs knew that they couldn't find him in the forest and so left.

The fox was very scared, and tired. He rested for a while then went for a drink. He took a long, long drink; oh how thirsty he was from all the running. Then he said to himself, "no more naughtiness in the village, no more disturbing the chickens. Next time I will go somewhere else to have fun."
